Rare C19th Indo-Portuguese carved rosewood garniture of mirrors.
Rare C19th Indo-Portuguese carved rosewood garniture of mirrors .

Incredibly well-detailed carved decorative set of 3 mirrors , comprising large oval mirror and pair of shelved arched-top mirror-backed side mirrors. The intricate deep carving depicting exotic fruits , vegetables and flowers from the sub-continent . The oval mirror showing European influence of design with a carved ribbon surmount . The set also features a carved pineapple motif , long regarded in the West as a symbol of wealth and hospitality.

Probably produced in the state of Goa , Western India , an area long colonised by the Portuguese as an important trading base , and reknowned for the production of quality carved wares in both timber and ivory for export to the West.

Stunning quality set of mirrors , almost certainly unique and possibly produced as exhibition pieces. A masterful 'tour-de-force' example of the skills of the carver , resulting in an arresting and flourishing display of striking visual impact together with exhuberant excess.

Excellent colour and original condition .
The deeply carved rosewood frames having achieved a glowing contrasting patination and highlights . The original oval mirror plate with minor areas of atmospheric 'foxing'. Original panelled back to oval .

Early C19th late George III period carved gilt-wood 3-plate 'landscape' over-mantel mirror.
Early C19th late George III period carved gilt-wood 3-plate 'landscape' over-mantel mirror.

Well-carved and detailed gilt-wood framed mirror , which has been professionally and sympathetically restored and re-gilded approximately 10 years ago ,at what would have been very considerable cost, resulting in a spectacular brightly-burnished landscape-type mirror in first-class condition.

Skilful attention to detail and first-class quality gilding technique have produced an excellent restored mirror.

The plates divided by finely-scaled architectural fluted columns with carved leaf-wrapped Corinthian capital details and 'split-pearl' carving . The frieze with attractive gridded lattice-and-star decoration.. The central rectangular tablet of the frieze with a well-defined carved gilt-wood conch-shell with carved reeds or foliage fronds, to each side. Well-spaced spheres adorn the top below a shaped inverted break-front cornice . Each end fitted with a gilded ball foot to sit upon a chimney-piece or overmantel.

Original centre mirror plate with some atmospheric foxing , the side plates very clear and possibly late C19th replacements.

Overall presented in excellent condition .

Mid C19th carved giltwood oval-framed overmantel mirror with unusual carved fern motif decoration.
Mid C19th carved giltwood oval-framed overmantel mirror with unusual carved fern motif decoration .

The central oval-framed plate with applied surmount and side-pieces carved decoration featuring "Hart's-Tongue" fern fronds. Original throughout with good clear original mirror plate and back-boards. The original gilding with a gently aged patina, which in places has subtly worn through to show the decorative and atmospheric red-pink gesso ground beneath .

The "Hart's-Tongue" fern deriving it's name from the likeness of it's fronds in appearance ,to that of the tongue of an adult male red deer or hart . The leaf of the "Hart's-Tongue" fern was also used in folk medicine as a spleen tonic.

During the mid to late C19th , 'ferneries' and botanical collections of ferns were highly-desirable and fashionable . 'Pteridomania' (or fern craze) was a term coined by Charles Kingsley, clergyman and naturalist , to describe the fervoured collecting of British and exotic species of fern which gripped the country during this period.

It is likely this attractively designed mirror frame with its unusual and possibly unique fern decoration, was commissioned by such an aficionado , naturalist, horticulturist or botanist.

Designed to fit flush to ,and sit upon , the top of a mantle-piece or fire-surround .

Fine late C18th Italian Florentine carved gilt-wood frame mirror of good large scale.
Fine late C18th Italian Florentine carved gilt-wood frame mirror of good large scale. Heavily carved gilt-wood frame with scroll and leaf/foliate decoration , retaining its original gilding. Impressive 'double' depth carved and pierced frame with typical Florentine central cartouche/reserve carving detail to the centres of all sides. The hand-bevelled edge plate with a good silvered-grey period colour , probably having been replaced around 100 years ago. The frame probably conceived originally for an oil painting .

Some minor chips and cracks to the decoration and carving commensurate with age ,and the back-boards having been replaced.
