Description
A fine quality early C20th George II period revival walnut armchair .
A faithful copy of an important early C18th George I period carved walnut armchair in the manner of Giles Grendey . The boldly proportioned armchair with an elaborate broad and shapely carved shell and scroll detail splat , with figured and burr walnut veneer .
The carved swept arms with eagle’s head and feather carved terminals , the balloon-shaped ‘drop-in’ upholstered seat covered with finely-worked petit-point period style floral needlework . The edge of seat frame having a cross-grained moulding profile , above a veneered frieze.
Raised on carved cabriole supports, the forelegs with shell and harebell carved details, terminating onto carved ‘claw and ball’ feet . The rear having raked angled cabriole supports onto pad feet.
In excellent original condition with a wonderful faded period-style colour and patina, almost indistinguishable from an early C18th Georgian period chair .
Attributed to the cabinet-making firm of W. Charles Tozer of Brook St., London , a company who specialised in the production of high quality copies of C18th period walnut furniture during this period.
