Decorative mid C20th bronzed terracotta portrait bust study of Caesar Augustus.
Well-modelled bust study of Caesar Augustus, also known as Octavian ,first Roman Emperor of the Roman Empire 27 BC-AD 14.
Depicted with his head turned slightly to dexter , raised on a circular socle base . Shown wearing a traditional Roman decorative military breast-plate known as a �heroic� or ��muscle� cuirass The front of the base inscribed �AVGVSTVS� in Roman style lettering .
This bust study portrays a portion of the ancient monumental statue of the deified emperor known as �Augustus Prima Porta� the original standing over 2 metres tall . The excavated statue is now housed in the Vatican Museums, Rome , Italy is one of the most famous sculptures of the ancient world and the best known portrait of Augustus.
The cast terracotta body with a patinated surface and coloured to simulate bronze .
In good condition with a consistent colour and finish, with some minor historic chips. .
