Description

Mid C19th Greek revival design bronze vase lamp-base .
Elegant ancient Grecian design Krater vase or lamp-base . The tapering ovoid body fitted with scroll volute handles with mask terminals, the body with opposing cast high-relief studies of goddesses or muses seated in classical ‘Klismos’ chairs .
The neck cast with anthemion and Greek-key details, the whole raised on a turned circular socle base support with further cast details .
The top cast with an ovolo edge , the centre with an inset threaded aperture for a light-fitting , originally designed to carry an oil reservoir vessel.
Excellent original condition with a rich , consistent colour and patina.
Probably English, attributed to William Bullock following the design influences of the leading Greek and classical revivalists , such as Thomas Hope .
