Pair of early C19th Regency period oak hall or footman’s chairs by Gillows of Lancaster.
Smart pair of oak hall chairs raised on turned and reeded forelegs with ‘peg’ toes, and each stamped beneath the frame on the front bar by the esteemed cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster. GILLOWS LANCASTER .
The underside of the seats with original blocks and bracing bars demonstrating the overall build quality.
The solid oak seats with channeled detail with re-entrant corners to the edges , the seat frames with panelled reserves to the sides and front . The scrolled and shaped carved backs with a central ribbed ‘shell’ type panel . The reverse of the backs with carved-out concave ‘finger-grips’ for ease of movement
In excellent original condition with no breaks , damage or repairs. The seats of each with a shrinkage gap between the boards .
Good mellow colour and patina, the backs showing subtle medullary-ray figuring to the well-selected oak .
In strong and sturdy condition.
