Description

Early C19th George IV period mahogany library or writing table of free-standing form .
A high quality mahogany library or writing table of good scale and imposing presence, fitted with 2 frieze drawers and corresponding ‘dummy drawers’ to verso .
Raised on platform ends with boldly carved architectural scrolled corbel details , supporting ‘standard end’ uprights , the design taking its influences from classical antiquity. The top of the uprights with shaped bracket supports with applied circular roundels or paterae detail .
Superbly-figured ‘plum pudding’ or quilted mahogany top with gently-rounded corners .The ends of the friezes with stepped and panelled reserve corners.
The whole raised on compressed and cupped bun-type feet with ‘concealed’ patent brass castors and wheels each stamped “Lewty Patent” with a crown above . The 2 cock-beaded full-depth drawers fitted original turned mahogany knob pulls and brass escutcheons, with working brass locks and a key . The mahogany-lined drawers with quarter section ‘dust-bead’ corners .
In excellent original condition with a rich colour and patina, retaining it’s original surface and skin . Finely selected high-grade figured mahogany throughout .
The top with minor dents and scars beneath the polish commensurate with age , use and purpose.
* James Windeyer Lewty patented his castor design as used on this table in October 1830 . This helps to accurately and precisely date this exceptional mahogany table , and further demonstrates the quality employed in it’s manufacture, as without doubt the castors themselves would have been considered top-class and ‘state-of-the-art’ expensive fittings at this period.
Cleaned and waxed in our workshops, ready to use .
