Late C18th mahogany Sheraton period ‘estate’ bureau of impressive scale and proportions.
Bold mahogany bureau with a fall-front enclosing an elaborately-fitted serpentine shaped interior of inlaid satinwood and sycamore drawers , pigeonholes and central cupboard with an unusual lifting hinged central door . The fall interior fitted with a green baize writing or work surface .
Fitted with two short drawers below the fall retaining their original brass ‘swan-neck’ handles . The doors below inlaid with banded roundels , enclosing an interior fitted with sliding storage trays , which have channelled supports and a brass ‘keeper’ on the rear of the doors to bear them . Fitted with original brass locks throughout.
Raised on bracket feet . Satinwood cross-banded fall and drawers , the whole with a rich colour and patina.
The fall with a minor shrinkage crack , the condition being generally excellent with minor wear commensurate with age ,use and purpose.
An unusual, probably bespoke design , providing practical storage and a large writing surface , possibly conceived for the estate office of a countryhouse estate .
