Description
Late C18th George III period Scottish mahogany serpentine-front sideboard .
A fine quality mahogany Sheraton-influenced design Scottish sideboard or serving table of elegant and impressive proportions.
Fitted with regional feature ‘staged’ or stepped raised upper section and typical Scottish design ‘dot and hollow’ boxwood inlay directly attributable to Edinburgh-based cabinet-makers of the period . The back fitted with the original brass rail ‘splash back’ with decorative finials and shaped ends , designed to hold a curtain or cloth backing to protect the walls behind from spillages of food and drink during banqueting .
The serpentine outline front fitted with 3 frieze drawers , the shaped ends each with deep drawers fitted as cellarettes with bottle sections .
The whole raised on 6 tapering square section legs , terminating in ‘spade’ feet . The drawers fitted with seemingly original oval back-plate brass handles .
Oak-lined drawers throughout , of highest quality construction and precise dove-tail joinery , with box-wood string inlay and edges. Drawers all retaining their original brass locks (keys missing) .
The stepped platform back of corresponding serpentine outline with matched curl veneers and corresponding box-wood stringing .
Excellent original condition with a rich colour and patina. Some historic ring marks, stains and blemishes to the top and the platform , minor crack/split to one end of top but crucially retains original surface and skin .
