Description

Late C18th George III period Cuban mahogany drop-leaf ‘Pembroke’ table.
An exceptionally original and fine quality oval drop-leaf mahogany Pembroke table of free-standing symmetrical form . Constructed entirely from a high grade of finely-figured Cuban mahogany , fitted with a single oak-lined ‘cock-beaded’ edge drawer with original lock (no key present).
Both the working drawer front and the corresponding ‘dummy’ drawer front , fitted with the original gilded brass oval back-plates and ring handles . The top of the table with a simple moulded edge .
The elegant tapering square-section legs with carved and moulded detail and a subtle carved motif to both top and bottom. Fitted with the original period brass socket castors and flattened ‘barrel’ type wheels , largely retaining their original lacquered finish .
The folding ‘rule-jointed’ drop-leaves each supported on a fold-out shaped ‘ear’ bracket support. The underside of the leaves each with a cleverly-conceived bevelled edge with adds delicacy and elegance to of the perspective of the table when raised .
In fine untouched original ‘dry’ condition. A rich dark patina throughout , with only very minor marks and rings to the original polished surface .
* the term “Pembroke” table probably derives it name from Henry Herbert , 9th Earl of Pembroke (1693-1751) , a noted amateur architect and connoisseur .
