C19th Chinese Export trade camphor wood brass-bound military campaign writing box.
High quality brass-bound military officer’s solid camphor wood portable campaign writing box and slope . The top with a retractable mechanism tambour lid , which opens when the front drawer is used . Inside the tambour closure is a rising ‘sprung ’ stationary compartment fitted with divisions and pigeon-holes .
The fold-over lid opening to form a baize-lined writing slope . The interior with ‘secret’ drawer compartments and complete with original circular ruler .
The lid inlaid with a fine ebony re-entrant corner panel line . The edges of the top with protective brass banding , the sides each fitted with a quality recessed brass carrying handle , the drawer also fitted with a recessed brass handle . The lid has a brass name-plate panel to the centre , which bears a later presentation inscription.
In excellent original condition with no damage, losses or repairs. The sweet-scented camphor has a rich golden patina and colour . The use of Chinese camphor alludes to its probable intended use in tropical climes of a military campaign, as this timber is renowned for its insect repellent properties.
