Description

Magnificent late C18th George III period mahogany sideboard of serpentine outline with inlaid decoration.
Bold-scale Georgian period mahogany sideboard with serpentine shaped front raised on six elegant square section legs with spade or block feet . The top with a broad cross-banding and line inlay with gently-swept rounded corners .
The front with 2 deep oak-lined drawers , the cross-banded fronts with oval veneered and banded panels flanking a broad central drawer above an arched and shaped centre. Fitted with apparently original gilded-brass ring handles and classically-inspired design back-plates to each drawer .
Inlaid with sophisticated classically-referenced honeysuckle and flower-head designs in fruitwood, boxwood and pen-work , the sides of the central arch with decorative inlaid spandrels . The whole with box-wood stringing and inlay . The central long drawer with decorative banding and inlay , designed to give the appearance of two parallel drawers . The drawers all with inlaid flower-heads to each of the corners . The centre of the arch with an Inlaid and pen-work oval classical motif from antiquity .
The left-hand-side end return fitted with a discrete cupboard with brass knob , a feature which would have provided the Georgian diner with a facility to store a chamber pot or bourdaloue , thus not having to leave the dining room whilst feasting to relieve oneself.
In excellent original, as found , ‘countryhouse’ condition. Minor historic repairs to veneer and banding . The top with some minor marks and historic scratches, but importantly with no splits or cracks . No breaks or repairs to the legs .
The whole sideboard has achieved an attractive mellow ,consistent patina and colour .The reverse with original pink ‘red-washed’ finish .
An impressively-scaled and elegantly drawn Georgian mahogany sideboard of good powerful proportions with fashionable neo-classical inlay of the period taking its influence from antiquity.
