Early C19th Regency mahogany Canterbury in the style of Gillows of Lancaster and London .
Stylish mahogany Canterbury with turned corner pillar uprights in faux simulated ‘bamboo’ style in the fashionable Regency manner alluding to Chinoiserie and the Orient. The ‘boat’ or navette-shaped dished top with 3 open division compartments with vertical dividers of a design commonly found on Gillows Canterburys of this period. The ends with cross bars , the tops of the uprights fitted with turned paterae .
Raised on turned legs with distinctive reeded details , and fitted with brass fork castors with original leather wheels. The base fitted with a single ebony-line edged drawer with original cast brass knob pull handle .
In excellent original condition with no damage or repairs . Good rich colour and patina .
Canterburys of this type were originally conceived to hold sheet music but are now commonly used to house newspapers and magazines.
