Late C19th Chinese Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) carved hardwood centre table of exhibition quality.
Exceptional quality Chinese carved hardwood or hongmu ,centre table of serpentine outline . Raised on boldly shaped cabriole-style legs with profuse crisply-carved detail throughout. The knees of the legs carved with large intricate chrysanthemum , peonies or dahlia flower-heads and tendrils. The base of the table joined by a carved and shaped X-frame stretcher with a large carved vine leaf mounted on the centre with carved fruit detail and a hanging bunch of grapes beneath. The stretcher beneath also with carved and pierced detail.
The serpentine shaped lateral friezes of the table each with prunus and bamboo carving details and with opposing panel cartouches of ducks and quail in landscapes . The end friezes with carved prunus blossom carved vignettes. The serpentine outline top with a carved edge of a wave or vitruvian-scroll design. The table top with a central bevelled-edge panel of richly figured and deeply patinated huali. The surrounding edge of the top with a sophisticated and geometric design carved border .
The highly skilled carving on this table is of the finest possible quality, and together with the quality grade of densely grained timber , it produces a piece of workmanship of exceptional and probable exhibition standard .
In excellent original condition with no damage or repairs. The table has been sympathetically cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
A truly magnificent , impressive and important Chinese table produced for the export market to Europe in the last quarter of the nineteenth century.
