C19th Indian colonial brass-bound teak scribe's casket or strong-box.
Heavily brass-bound and studded travelling writing and valuables chest with fitted and compartmentalised interior , with lift-out central lidded box with vacant 'well' below. Decorative studded brass design and cut brass heart-shaped motifs , perhaps denoting a marriage gift .
The ends fitted with heavy cast brass carrying handles for ease of lifting and raised on bracket-type footed plinth base.
Chests of this type were produced throughout the C18th and C19th by the countries of the Indian Ocean under the control and style influences of Dutch and Portuguese colonists , and are often referred to as 'Zanzibar' or 'Arab' chests .
In good original condition with no losses to brass-ware or interior. Fitted with a lock and supplied with working key .
