Description

Set of 4 early C19th Regency period 'Greek revival' dining or side chairs in original simulated/faux rosewood finish.
Mint condition set of 4 'Trafalgar' back design chairs raised on sabre fore-legs . Inspired by ancient Greek design with large central carved anthemion motifs , and decorated with well-executed simulated rosewood graining to the carved beech frames .
The scroll-over tops applied with turned paterae , the lateral splat-backs with carved leaf decoration.
The decorative 'Trafalgar' design of this chairs was fashionable after 1808 when the design was first published in the trade catalogue 'The London Chair-makers and Carvers Book of Prices Supplement'. The 'Trafalgar' chair's essential feature being the continuous curving line formed by the sides of the back , the seat rail and chair legs . The use of curved sabre type legs derived by an Ancient Greek chair style , and the use of the anthemion motif was a fashionable feature of the Greek revival style of the period.
