Description

Superb quality mid C19th burr walnut bookcase cabinet by Gillows of Lancaster.
Well-proportioned inverted break-front centre open bookcase with twin glazed door cabinets to the ends . Constructed in highly-figured burr walnut onto a mahogany carcass , with triple adjustable shelves to both the open centre and glazed cabinets . The twin cabinets with simple horizontal bar glazed doors . The mahogany shelves in the centre with walnut veneered front edges . The whole raised on a plinth base . The reverse with panelled construction.
An elegant bookcase of sophisticated and simplified architectural design . The selected veneers 'book-matched' throughout and having achieved a wonderful rich patina and colour .
The chosen Circassian or Turkish figured walnut (Juglans Regina) originating from Eastern Europe and Asia , displays the strong characteristics of tight burr grain and dark figuring, and is favoured by cabinet-makers for its quality.
Fitted with all original brass-ware and locks , fitted with patented hinges by Horne . Supplied with the working original key .
The top of the left-hand side door-frame stamped by "Gillows Lancaster" the highly esteemed firm of cabinet-makers .
In excellent original condition with only minor marks to the top commensurate with age, use and purpose. Has been cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
