Description

Impressive late C18th George III period mahogany and satinwood linen press or wardrobe with 'swan-neck' pediment.
Smart late C18th mahogany 2-door linen press on chest-of-drawers base . The doors with well-figured satinwood oval panels and satinwood cross-banding , enclosing a cupboard fitted with 2 adjustable slide shelves.
Surmounted by a striking 'swan-neck' broken-arch pediment with pierced detail, satinwood fan paterae to the terminals and central raised stage . The frieze of the pediment inlaid with satinwood reserves .
The chest base fitted with 2 short and 2 long ,oak-lined drawers each with conforming satinwood cross-banded edges and 'cock-beading' . The whole raised on original shaped bracket feet . The brass plate handles being old replacements , which have been fitted to the original holes .
The interior of the top has been skilfully lined approximately 100 years ago with aromatic cedar or camphor-wood .
The interiors of the doors fitted with their original decorative brass bolts and quality brass hinges . Fitted with the original brass lock and escutcheon, supplied with the original 'bow-top' loop steel key .
In excellent original condition and with a wonderful glowing colour and patina, the golden satinwood contrasting with the darker mahogany.
Demonstrates design-feature influences from two of the leading influential English cabinet-makers of the late C18th, Thomas Chippendale and Thomas Sheraton. The design of the pediment taking its inspiration from classicism and the Roman triumphal arch .
The whole made in 3 sections in the traditional manner, to aid moving and transportation.
