Description

Pair of late C19th/ early C20th giant clam shells or "Tridacna Gigas".
Large pair of natural history specimens with great decorative value and visual impact. Found in the shallow coral reefs of the South Pacific and Indian oceans , these huge bivalve molluscs have sadly now become one of the most endangered clam species. These wonders of the natural world, can have a lifespan of over 100 years and can develop to reach as much as 120 cm across and weigh 200kgs. In the mythology of the sea , these giant shells were thought to be a danger to divers , trapping and closing around the legs of the unwary.
This large pair of shells are in excellent condition with a wonderful luminescent colour and creamy surface to the interiors. The ribbed exterior of the shells with a heavily encrusted sea-washed finish . Some evidence of tiny red coral deposits to the exterior surface.
Hugely decorative pair of shells with striking presence. These shells have long been sought after by collectors and connoisseurs as both wonders of the natural world and conversation pieces.
Examples can be found in many important country and noble house collections and 'Wunderkammer' , and also in some European continental churches where they were sometimes used to form holy-water stoups or fonts , and water receptacles for pilgrims .
Very heavy pair of shells , being of impressive proportions and dramatic scale .
