Description

Interesting and decorative early C20th copper and brass umbrella or stick-stand fashioned as a coachman's or postilion's protective boot .
Well-made copper and brass copy of a postilion's boot designed as a stick or umbrella stand . The ankle area with an overlapped section and 'stitching' detail , the whole boot showing handcrafted hammered detail , the brass stacked heel of weighted form to provide stability. The shaped opening to the side with 'lace-holes' pierced detail. The interior with an old paint finish .
The original conception of this type of boot , heavily constructed in leather and metal , is traditionally worn by horse-mounted coachmen riding the front mount of a horse-drawn carriage with multiple lead horses and was designed to provide the rider's inside leg with protection from damage and crush injury inbetween the horses and the shaft of the carriage.
Has an aged patina with some atmospheric spotting and discolouration , and some wear and scratches to the painted interior.
A stylish and unusual conversation-piece addition to a hall-way or porch .
