Description

Late C18th /early C19th George III period mahogany linen press/ wardrobe attributed to Gillows of Lancaster.
Excellent quality mahogany linen press cupboard on chest of elegant and restrained design, which has been adapted for hanging space and fitted with a brass rail . The cornice projection with finely moulded detail together with ebony and satinwood inlay creating a dentil design . Raised on 'French' splay bracket feet in the manner and distinctive design of the esteemed cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster and London .
The whole has been constructed from the finest grade of mahogany, the door panels having mirrored matched grain . The reverse of the panels with fielded or chamfered edges .
The oak-lined and cock-beaded edge two-short over two-long drawers ,all fitted with distinctive Gillow pattern mercury-gilded cast angular and reeded brass drop-handles with beaded circular back plates . The doors fitted with their original brass bolts , escutcheons and fittings . The working brass lock supplied with the original key and fitted with an 'axe-head' handle to operate the latch . The doors centred with the original reeded brass 'slamming' bar .
In superb untouched original condition throughout. Has achieved a mellow , rich colour and patination, with some pleasing variants to colour by natural exposure to sun-light .
Panelled backboards adding to the distinctive design features and Gillows attribution .
The lift-off cornice with a flat boarded top.
