Late C19th Italian bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir sculpture, after the antique, " The Spinario ".
Well-cast desk-top scale bronze sculpture of the iconic statue of "The Spinario " or Thorn-puller . Souvenir bronzes such as this ,were produced for rich tourists completing the 'Grand Tour" of the classical sights and sites of Europe .
The Boy with Thorn , also called Fedele or Spinario, is an ancient Greco-Romano Hellenistic bronze sculpture now housed in the Palazzo dei Conservatori , Rome , Italy .
The subject , a faithful messenger, thought to be a lowly shepherd boy , is depicted in intense concentration attempting to draw a thorn from the sole of his foot.
Good consistent dark patination.
