Description

C19th Naval Officer's brass-bound teak 2-part campaign chest of drawers.
Interesting Naval Officer's campaign or service chest of drawers . The distinctive Naval pattern type 2-part chest with carved inset rounded turned knob handles. The ends of both chest sections fitted with lateral bars or spars with rope-holes to allow the chest to be securely lashed and secured when stowed on-board ship .
The whole with brass reinforced corners with steel screws and brass support and strengthening strapping . All drawers fitted with their original locks and with raised circular brass escutcheons, supplied with a working steel key . Each dove-tail lined drawer with an incised line to the edge simulating a 'cock-beaded' moulding.
The chest constructed in 2 sections for ease of movement and carriage, located with raised dowels . The upper section fitted 2 short and 1 long drawer , the lower section with 2 long drawers. The whole raised from the ground slightly on 4 compressed bun feet .
In good original condition, showing the marks and minor repairs from historic active use in service life .
The heavy teak construction providing robust storage and protection for use and transportation on both Naval vessels and campaigns.
The chest has achieved an attractive mellow honey-coloured patination and hue.
A practical and neatly-scaled chest with a huge sense of historical presence and gravitas .
