Description

C19th Regency period mahogany Canterbury or magazine rack in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster.
Good large-scale Canterbury of unusual design with multi-colonnaded flatted-back half column uprights of architectural form to all sides and corners . The Doric-type columns with swollen entasis shafts and turned capital tops , the reverse with flat surfaces .
Of restrained rectangular form , raised on turned legs fitted with original lacquered brass cup castors and wheels . Fitted with a single oak-lined drawer , retaining its original turned wooden knob pulls .
The body fitted with 2 original removable or adjustable square-slatted dividers , which can be lifted out if required to form an open centre.
The top of the Canterbury fitted with an historic charming narrow brass-band 'country-house' repair , which has achieved a smoothly worn polished and patinated surface.
Though unmarked or stamped , the Canterbury has the quality of timber and design which allude to its probable origins as being from the esteemed cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster and London .
Good rich colour and patina to the well -chosen grade of mahogany. Of powerful classical architecturally-inspired design .
