Description

Fine mid C19th Vizagapatam Indian buffalo horn, sandalwood, ebony and ivory workbox of sarcophagus form .
Indian ribbed and reeded buffalo-horn veneered work or sewing box constructed of sandalwood with a fitted interior with various carved ebony lidded compartments with finely carved ivory handles , pin cushions and thread spools . The edges with black lac decorated ivory banding . The liftout tray conceals a storage space below. The lid fitted with a small hinged interior compartment with decorative carved ebony motif handle edged in a band of black lac decorated ivory .
The sarcophagus-shaped box with shaped hinged lid of raised and angled form of sunburst pattern, surmounted by a carved pommel. The opened lid supported by a folding brass stay . Raised on ball carved horn feet.
In excellent original condition with no damage or repairs, minor chips to edge of lid . The horn having a wonderful faded lustre and patina. The interior with all original fittings
Fitted with original lock and key .
