Late C19th Ceylonese porcupine quill, ebony and bone-inlaid basket .
Interesting rectangular shaped desk-top basket with hoop swing handle . The ebony frame with inlaid circular 'dot' detail, the base with an intricate inlaid geometric design.
The open-work sloping sides with porcupine quill divisions. The basket raised on compressed turned bun feet .
Wares of this type were produced in Southern Ceylon during the late C19th in areas centred around the trading posts of Matara and Galle , principally for export and tourist sale.
In excellent original condition condition. Minor losses to dot inlay .
