C19th Italian 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze sculpture after the antique, of an athlete .
Finely-cast signed bronze reduction of the statue of an athlete excavated from the site of Herculaneum at the Villa of the Papyri.
The male athlete is depicted completely nude posed in a stance of readiness. The Roman statue thought to be a copy or re-working of the Greek original of the 4th century BC by Lysipp's school. The Roman excavated statue now on exhibition in Naples , Museo Archeologico Nazionale .
This handsome reduction in excellent condition and good consistent patination , is signed by the Neapolitan foundry on the rear edge of the rectangular base.
