Description

Fine mid C18th George II period mahogany architect's or draughtsman’s table of metamorphic design.
Wonderfully original example of a mid Georgian period reading , writing or drawing table in excellent untouched condition. The twin-plank mahogany top hinged with an adjustable easel ratchet support , released by the original brass 'button' catch . The front frieze fittted with a hinged drop-down oak-lined flap /drawer for storage of documents papers or drawings. Fitted with side lopers which extend to support the fitted retractable slide which retains it's original green felt or baize lining .
The top fitted with holes or apertures in which to fit it's original removable moulded-section book-rest . Raised on square section legs with inside chamfered edges ,each fitted with original barrel-type brass castors .
The legs united by a shaped lower tier or shelf of symmetrical format with concave sides . This lower platform has a minor historic shrinkage crack .
All original brass-ware , the working brass lock a possible later period replacement, supplied with its original 'loop' handle steel key . Fitted with original brass pulls and escutcheon plate of simple design .
Tables such as this were popular with gentry during this mid C18th with the growth of interest in design and architectural studies . Thomas Chippendale's first edition "Director " in 1754 featured designs for ratcheted table tops such as this .
The quality of the mahogany and the patina achieved cannot be overstated . A wonderful original table of practical scale and size , of restrained and understated design.
