Description

Large late C19th carapace shell of a Loggerhead sea turtle , "Caretta caretta".
Interesting and highly decorative sea turtle carapace. The deep brown and yellow lustre shell of typical 'heart' shape with multiple platelets and shaded lustrous patina.
The largest of all the hard-shell turtles, the Loggerhead is an omnivore oceanic turtle distributed throughout the world. The Loggerhead has a life span of 47-67 years , and this large example therefore being from a mature adult turtle.
Acquired from a local country-house where it has adorned the entrance hall-way for six generations.
Minor areas of old damage to shell surface , some raised 'bubbles' and some minor discolouration, but has achieved a deep brown and yellow flecked natural lustre and patination.
