C19th French bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir sculpture, after the antique , of "Spinario ".
Well-cast bronze reduction of the iconic "Spinario " or "The Thorn Puller" . This larger scale example cast after a model by Jean-Antoine Houdon 1741-1828 (inscribed to rear) and inscribed to the base "Musee du Capitole " , where the original is now exhibited.
The Spinario sculpture was originally recorded outside the Lateran Palace , Rome c. 1165. The Roman bronze was a copy of a lost Hellenistic 3rd Century marble statue.
Also known as "Il Fedele" , the sculpture captures the boy subject in intense concentration attempting to remove a thorn from the sole of his foot .
Good larger-scale copy with rich , dark patination. Minor loss of colour to the head from handling.
