Description

C19th bronze bust of the Greek hero , Ajax.
Well-cast French or Italian bronze bust portrait study of the mythological Greek warrior hero, Ajax.
Son of King Telamon , he plays an important role and is portrayed as a towering figure and a warrior of great courage in Homer's 'Iliad'and in the 'Epic Cycle' , a series of epic poems about the Trojan War.
Wonderful cast detail to the helmet featuring eagles, centaurs and panthers amongst the decoration. Raised on a turned socle base, the head turned to dexter.
Excellent consistent rich patina. Some minor discolouration to the rear of the shoulders.
