Description

Large pair of early C20th composition classical design terrace/garden vases , of campana form and copies of the antique Gaeta vase.
Highly decorative pair of reconstituted or 'cast-stone' vases decorated with all-round classical figure relief and with satyr, or Bacchus mask, handle terminals . Raised on a spreading fluted foot onto to a square base, the top roll-over edge with 'egg and dart' detail .
Faithful copies of the esteemed ancient carved marble Gaeta vase now in the National Museum , Naples ,Italy . Named after the town of its discovery in central Italy , the antique Gaeta vase was created by the Greek sculptor Salpion in 1st century B.C .
The decoration represents Hermes,the Greek God, giving the infant Dionysus to the Nymphs to raise and educate him .
Of good large scale with a pleasing weathered patina and surface. Each vase in two sections for ease of movement , and located on a central spigot .
One old repair to cracked corner of square base . No chips , repairs or breaks to bodies .
Great decorative statement , would work equally well indoors or out, whether in a terrace or garden setting , hallway or orangery.
