Description

Pair of late C19th/ early C20th giant clam shells or "Tridacna Gigas".
Large natural history specimens with great decorative value and visual impact . Found in the shallow coral reefs of the South Pacific and Indian oceans , these huge bivalve molluscs have sadly now become one of the most endangered clam species . The molluscs can have a lifespan of over 100 years and can develop to measure as much as 120cm across and weigh 200kgs. In the mythology of the sea , these giant shells were thought to be a danger to divers , trapping and closing around the legs of the unwary .
This large pair of shells have come from a local large country-house where they were wall-mounted to act as jardinieres for flower displays. The bases have been drilled each with two small drainage holes. They also come with 2 black-painted estate/blacksmith-made iron brackets which were used to mount them on the wall .
The exterior of the shells with heavily-encrusted sea-washed finish , the interiors with smooth creamy surface and deep irridescence. Some minor damage to ends of shaped extremities .
Overall good condition , with "other worldly" deep-sea charm and fascination.
