Description

Large late C19th/early C20th French stone-ware salt-glaze sculpture of "The Medici Lion" . Well-modelled copy of the iconic Lion after the antique original , now sited with his companion at the Loggia Dei Lanzi ,Piazza della Signoria , Florence, Italy . Previously sited at the Villa Medici ,Rome, from 1598 until moved to it's present location in 1789. The original marble lion being of ancient 2nd century origin.
This copy having been manufactured and stamped by Oustau & Company of Tarbes , France. Stamped to side of integral plinth base "Oustau Et Cie, Tarbes".
Depicted with his raised left paw upon a ball , the mouth half-open. Well-sculpted mane and body , the tail wrapped around his hind-quarters and back. Conveys the power and majesty of the beast.
Rich ,dark brown colour with mottled glaze finish.
Minor chips to base and claw, but no breaks or repairs .
A large-scale classical design statement which would work equally as well in either an interior or garden scheme.
