Description

Pair of early C19th George IV period turned rosewood ornamental vases.
Well-selected grade of rosewood has been chosen to produce this pair of swollen-bodied vases on ring turned bases into a square foot.
The hobby of ornamental turning in exotic woods and Ivory , was a popular pastime in the late C18th and early C19th amongst both middle-class and aristocratic gentlemen.
The pastime was made popular by the production of lathes for ornamental turning by the London founded company of Jean-Jacques Holtzapffel.Indeed in addition to the machinery ,the company of Holtzapffel also published 2 volumes of a treatise entitled "Turning and Mechanical Manipulation ", which instructed gentlemen on use and decorative technique. The lathes were hugely expensive when produced and individually numbered, hence their use was the preserve of the upper classes.
Excellent colour , patina and condition.
