Pair of large C19th Japanese red lacquer decorated carved wooden figures. Striking and decorative large-scale pair of figures , depicting a male Oni or demon figure ,together with a female figure ,probably Kannon ,Buddhist Goddess of Mercy , carrying a basket. The carved wooden bodies decorated in deep scarlet lacquer with parcel-gilt highlights .
Excellent carved detail to both figures , both shown wearing matching flowing traditional robes with key-pattern decoration to the edges and gilt-heightened flower and cloud design .
Wear to gilt and surface commensurate with age and use , minor wear to edges of robes .
Both of free-standing form ,and raised on well-carved realistically modelled feet.
