Description

Early C20th Italian cast bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir sculpture, after the antique, "Apollo Belvedere" . Superior quality casting with excellent patina by the 'Sabatino de Angelis & Fils' Foundry , Naples. Signed to rear of base and dated 1904.
The figure of the God is depicted in contrapposto pose, depicted as an archer having just shot an arrow. The subject is thought to show the moment having just slain the Python or serpent guarding Delphi.
The "Apollo Belvedere" or the Pythian Apollo is a celebrated marble sculpture from classical antiquity, now exhibited in the Pio-Clementine Museum of the Vatican Museums , Rome, Italy.
Dark , consistent patina with a greenish hue.
Excellent original condition. This version depicted as the original and completely naked , has an original tiny cast hole for the addition of an optional 'modesty' fig-leaf.
Signed and dated.
