Description

C18th Maltese olive-wood commode/chest-of-drawers. Mid C18th rococo-style 3-drawer commode chest of canted or 'trapezoid' shape/ outline. Veneered in olive-wood, fruit-wood and walnut with box-wood stringing. Cross-banded and strung quarter-veneered top with central cartouche/motif, cross-grain moulded edge with over-hanging back. The rounded corner uprights inlaid with box-wood strung reserves. The whole standing on short stylised cabriole legs with hoof-type terminals. The conforming quarter-veneered sides with cross-banding and cartouche panels. The 3 cross-banded and strung drawers fitted with old replacement hexagonal-plate brass handles ,original oval brass escutcheon key-plates, and original steel locks fitted to drawers (no key). Fantastic glowing rich original patina and colour. The back fitted with original boards. Some old replacements to veneers, minor old repairs commensurate with age and use, and treated minor historic wood-worm. A rare piece of Southern Mediterranean, Maltese furniture of practical scale. Cleaned and waxed, ready for use.
