C19th French bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze sculpture after the antique of "Diana Chasseresse" / "Diana the Huntress". Large scale bronze by the celebrated Parisian foundry of Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) , signed on the reverse by the foundry and also bearing the impressed stamp of Achille Collas ,whose invention introduced the technique to produce smaller scale reductions of large classical statuary. `The marble original now housed in the Louvre , Paris , being a Roman (1st or 2nd century AD) over life-size copy of a lost Greek original c.325 BC . Discovered in Italy reputedly at Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli, the statue was gifted to Henry II of France by Pope Paul IV in 1556. Portrayed as a Huntress, the Goddess of the Chase has her quiver of arrows across her back ,and is attended by a buck deer ,with her left hand gripping part of her bow .She wears a short Dorian chiton ,a himation around her waist and sandals on her feet. Excellent condition and good consistent patination. Good clear foundry marks.
