Description

C19th 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze figure "Dancing Faun with Clappers" after the antique. Darkly patinated bronze statue of the iconic woodland faun from Greco-Romano mythology depicted with pointed faun ears ,tail and frenzied facial expression, dancing with cymbals in hands and his right foot upon a 'scabellum '(an Ancient Greek percussion instrument) . Well-cast Neapolitan reduction of the original now in Uffizi (Tribuna),Florence. First recorded in the C17th in the collection of the Duke of Tuscany , the ancient torso attributed to Praxiteles of Athens ,is thought to have had the head and arms replaced by the great Renaisssance master Michelangelo.Versions of the statue grace the great collections and museums of the world , including a large version cast after Massimiliano Soldani Benzi (1648-1740) in the grounds of Blenheim Palace ,Oxfordshire , seat of the Dukes of Marlborough.
