Description
Early C19th Japanese Imari porcelain vase and cover of huge scale. Stunning large ovoid jar with gilt 'shishi' dog with ball surmount on cover. Decorated in Imari palette with 'ink' blue and 'iron' red colours and produced in Arita ,Japan during the Edo period. All-over decoration of floral and bamboo panels with exotic/phoenix birds and Foe dogs or kylins in cartouches around the neck of the vase. Contemporary lid but possibly associated. Vases such as this became a furnishing staple of fine English period country-houses where their huge decorative appeal and exotic design contrasted with the restraint of English Georgian mahogany and walnut period furniture, and they were often used to decorate the interiors of unused fire-places in summer months.
