Description

Fine C18th Dutch Colonial palisander and ebony bronze-mounted chest .
Rare rosewood/palisander chest with ebony mouldings. Fitted with large cast-bronze side carrying handles with pierced back-plates, pierced escutcheon plate and large 'cabouchon' domed studs to lid .
Stands upon original loose/detachable turned bun feet on 'trestle' base frames with bracket-style rear supports (loose for ease of transportation).
Has a great bold presence together with a highly decorative quality , whilst also being a useful piece of period storage furniture.
Made in Dutch colonised Java, known as Batavia , these heavily-constructed costly storage chests were functional status symbols ,serving as an ostentatious display of wealth amongst the Dutch colonists. These type of chests were made for officers of the Dutch East India Company (the trading company known as the 'VOC' ) and would have been used during their various postings throughout the colonised trading countries.
A rare survivor in great original condition, cleaned and waxed.
A type of chest often found adorning the halls and landings of fine English country-houses. Retains it original functioning lock and key.
