Late C19th Japanese bronze study of an elephant and two attacking tigers. Meiji period (1868-1912) bronze group by Genryusai Seiya of fantastic quality depicting an Asian bull-elephant being attacked by two tigers. The trumpeting elephant is shown stamping on one attacker ,whilst the other tiger clambers onto his back. Superb quality casting and two-colour patinated detail , which shows both the aged and wrinkled skin texture of the elephant and the stripes of the tigers. The under belly of the elephant bearing the seal tablet reserve with signature 'Seiya Saku'. On original carved hardwood loose base . The elephant fitted with carved ivory or bone tusks .
