Description

Pair of C19th 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze vases. Well-cast copies of the 'Townley' vase, which is now housed in the British Museum. The 'Townley' vase is a large Roman marble vase of the 2nd Century BC, discovered in 1773 by the Scottish antiquarian and dealer, Gavin Hamilton whilst excavating a Roman villa near Lazio, Italy. The name comes from the English collector Charles Townley, who purchased the vase from Hamilton in 1774 for £250. The British Museum purchased it after his death in 1805. The ovoid vase has volute handles in the style of a pottery Krater or wine vessel. It is carved in bas-relief with a Bacchanalian procession, with vine-leaf decoration and birds-head handles. Good scale pair of vases , with some minor rubbing to the patination . Fitted with detachable liners. H (overall) 12" x W 6". Italy c. 1880
