Description
Early C19th George III period mahogany Canterbury of exceptional size and quality. A magnificently proportioned Canterbury of large scale ,finely chosen grade of timber with a wonderful rich patina and colour. A broad 'Country House' style rack of uncomplicated design, dished-top with 4 divisions above a mahogany-lined drawer with original brass knobs. Stands upon original heavy gilt-brass castors. Broadly-reeded uprights with 'cut-end' reeds, classically referencing the pipes of Apollo or Pan ,and alluding to its original conception to hold sheet music books or folios, capped with paterae which have achieved a great patina and surface.
A well-constructed 'no nonsense ' quality piece of late Georgian period furniture of grand scale .The grade of timber selected together with the build-quality and design of the vertical dividers, lead to a probable attribution to Gillows of Lancaster , though no stamp is present and the model is apparently unrecorded.
Large enough to easily accommodate the "Sunday Times ","Telegraph", "Country Life", "Vogue", "Racing Post" and a copy of the Bible!
