Early C20th bronze bust of Cassius. Signed and dated bronze study of the Roman General, philosopher and senator Gaius Cassius Longinus (85 BC-42 BC ) .Cassius was a leading instigator in the plot to assassinate Julius Caesar in an act of tyrannicide on 'The Ides of March' 44 BC ,and later led a rebellion in an attempt to seize power with Brutus .He died at the hands of his 'freedman' Pindarus, whom he ordered to kill him when he perceived his rebellious plot to grab control of The Empire and proclaim himself 'Imperator' had failed , and he was buried at Thasos . Inscribed to front "CASSIUS" and to rear "W. Fassbinder ,Koln 1908". Good patination . Powerful head and shoulders study with draped toga, head faced to 'sinister'(ie. looking to his left) raised on square block base .In Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar', Cassius is described as follows " Yon Cassius has a lean and hungry look; He thinks too much, such men are dangerous". A expression that the sculptor has captured in this strong image . H 12.5". Cologne, Germany 1908.
