C19th Italian verdegris bronze figure of Silenus . The original bronze statuette was excavated from the engulfed site of Pompeii in 1863 , this model designed to hold an oil or colza burner was modelled by Pietro Massulli and produced by the J.Chiurazzi & Fils Foundry in Naples ,and conceived as a base for an oil lamp.
Silenus wrapped in a loin cloth and grape-vine in his hair , a follower and mentor of Bacchus or Dionysus, the God of wine, is portrayed staggering , holding a serpent and supporting a ring with anthemion leaf motif decoration.
