Description

Fine quality early C19th late George III period mahogany bookcase.
Fitted with 2 reeded-edge slim frieze drawers over 2 glazed brass-hinged doors enclosing 2 adjustable shelves with ‘ladder-racking’ sides . The mahogany-lined drawers retaining their original cast brass ‘wreath’ design ring handles.
The doors fitted with a central reeded brass strip , brass lock and working key ,and having square-section brass bolts. The doors having moulded reserves or panels to the side stiles with corresponding reserve panels above .
The whole having reeded mouldings and edges, raised on 4 elegantly turned feet. The figured mahogany top with a reeded edge and over-hang to the rear . The verso fitted with original fielded panel back-boards .
A smart Georgian period low or ‘dwarf’ bookcase of restrained form and design, offering excellent capacity for books and objects . The choice and grade of mahogany, together with the design and overall quality of this bookcase point to a prestigious cabinet-making firm and perhaps allude to Gillows of Lancaster, although unmarked or stamped.
In excellent original condition with a rich original colour and patina. Has been sympathetically cleaned and waxed in our workshops .
