Larger scale pair of early C19th Regency period bronze sculptures of recumbent Sphinxes on marble block plinth bases .
Well-cast bronze studies of ancient Egyptian Sphinxes, depicting forward facing with their front legs outstretched and their tails wrapped across their bodies . Mounted on their original pink-hued coloured figured marble plinth bases .
The mythical Sphinx was known as a spiritual guardian representing the King�s power and wisdom. The Sphinx is depicted as having a leonine body with a human head wearing a pharaoh�s headress.
In excellent original condition, the bronze having a mellow, golden , consistent colour and patina. The marble plinths with no damage or repairs
*During the period of the early C19th , Sphinxes and objects inspired by antiquities from the re-discovered ancient Egyptian world were highly fashionable, following the influence of such leading designers and architects such as Thomas Hope (1769-1831) . �Egypto-mania� also followed the celebrated victory and defeat of Napoleon�s navy by Horatio Lord Nelson at �The Battle of Nile� .
