Description
Mid C19th George II period style carved gilt-wood framed pier mirror.
Impressive Georgian period revival gilt-wood mirror of early C18th revival style in the Palladian taste after a William Kent design . Having a bold carved scrolling ‘broken arch’ classically-inspired pediment from Roman antiquity , the frame with incised carved leaf details and carved mouldings surrounding the bevelled edge mercury-silvered mirror plate . The base of the mirror having a large carved conche shell motif , another classical reference alluding to Venus, the Roman goddess of love and fertility .
The gilding having achieved an aged period style surface and patina, the mirror plate with atmospheric ‘foxing’ , spots and degradation. Some minor wear and chips to edges of gilding .The verso with a fielded panel oak backboard.
A highly decorative early Georgian-style mirror of good large scale and proportions , being a highly convincing copy of an important early C18th gilt-wood pier mirror.
Minor sympathetic restoration to the gilding can be completed if required.
