Pair of early C19th gilded bronze studies of recumbent Sphinxes on rectangular patinated bronze plinth bases .
Smart pair of gilt bronze Sphinxes in the fashionable early C19th Egyptian revival taste. The well-modelled cast bronze studies with a gilded surface mounted upon rectangular dark patinated rectangular plinths.
In excellent original condition , the brightly gilded bodies with only minor wear commensurate with age and use .
Egyptian-inspired objects and decoration became highly fashionable in both England and France during the first quarter of the nineteenth century, influenced by the designers such as Thomas Hope and the re-discovery of the ancient world.
